What video player is recommended?

mpv. It’s a compact and fast open-source video player – available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS and Android.
2000px-Mpv-logo.svg.pngThe GUI and the player itself are pretty simple which makes it look clean instead of ‘overloaded’.
You have to add two “.conf” files (mpv.conf + input.conf) into your “mpv” folder for a decent basic setup.
If you want more and get the best visual results possible, then I recommend you reading this guide HERE.

Alternative video players:

The following video players should work for most fansub releases,
but aren’t recommended over mpv. Only use them if you have issues with mpv.

MPC-HC / MPC-BE + madVR + AssFilterMod
– VLC media player

Sometimes the subtitle rendering is different than MPC-HC (xysubfilter), why?

Libass is the default subtitle renderer for mpv. It’s also the same one used by VLC and AssFilterMod (which is available for MPC-HC).
There isn’t much of a difference between libass and xySubfilter.
A good benefit of libass is to switch back to Arial instead of showing spaces if a character is missing in the font. xySubfilter sometimes fails to render fonts, while mpv doesn’t. mpv sometimes renders blur, fades and bold fonts badly, while xySubfilter doesn’t. However, for this one you can simply use “sub-ass-vsfilter-blur-compat=yes” (only works in mpv) and get the “benefits” (it depends what renderer the fansub group used for their typeset) of xySubfilter combined with libass.
